Born and raised in South Carolina, Dr. Abbott began his academic career as a music major at the University of South Carolina. After a year, though, Dr. Abbott transferred into the mathematics department and never looked back. Through his studies, he developed a deep enjoyment of mathematics as an academic pursuit in its own right and a love of the beauty and power of mathematics as a language through which we can describe the physical world around us.
Upon completing his graduate studies at Texas A&M University, Dr. Abbott decided to leave the academic world to explore the private sector, working primarily in the oil and gas industry where his interests began to shift from pure to applied mathematics, particularly the area of data science.
Then, in 2013, God set Dr. Abbott on a new path that took him back into academia and ultimately led him along with his wife and six children to Mongolia, where he served as a Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science, seeking to share the beauty and wonder of God through mathematics and to harness the logical reasoning that is at the heart of mathematics to teach students to evaluate the logical consistency of the things they believe. Dr. Abbott is thrilled to continue this mathematical ministry at LeTourneau University, teaching students to see the magnificence of our Creator through the lens of mathematics.
When he’s not teaching and studying math, Dr. Abbott loves reading, tabletop gaming with his kids (and anyone else who will play), and watching college sports with his wife.
