LeTourneau University, the Christian Polytechnic University welcomes internationally recognized research center; advances strategic vision to become a trusted voice in faith, science, and technology.
LONGVIEW, TEXAS - LeTourneau University is honored to announce the acquisition of the Center for Bioethics & Human Dignity (CBHD), an internationally respected Christian academic research center that has served as a leading voice in bioethics for more than three decades.
The transition, effective January 1, 2026, brings CBHD's mission, staff, and operations to LeTourneau's campus in East Texas.

CBHD has been an integral part of Trinity International University (TIU) in Deerfield, Illinois, since its founding in 1994. Through a grant transfer, CBHD joins LeTourneau University with a goal of furthering its vital mission.
"The Center for Bioethics & Human Dignity has for decades cultivated an influential, thoughtful, distinctively Christian approach to some of the most pressing questions of our time related to living, dying, and what it means to be human," said Dr. Steven D. Mason, President of LeTourneau University. "I am thrilled to welcome CBHD to LeTourneau University, where we feel called to steward questions about the relationship between science, technology, and a biblical picture of human flourishing. As the Christian Polytechnic University, we are eager to advance the Center's vital mission in our society and enable the Center to enhance our learning environment, student experience, and service to the church and world."
A New Chapter for Christian Bioethics
CBHD will become aligned with LeTourneau's School of Theology and Vocation while maintaining close links with other academic programs across the university. The Center's staff—including Executive Director Matthew Eppinette, Operations and Events Manager Bryan Just, Research Scholar Anna Vollema, and Research Analyst Heather Zeiger—will become LeTourneau employees. Michael J. Sleasman, Ph.D., will join the School of Theology and Vocation faculty.
The acquisition also creates additional and expanded opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration across the entirety of LeTourneau University’s campus with the Center.
Addressing Bioethics 1.0 and 2.0
As advances in artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, and medical technology reshape modern life, CBHD's work takes on renewed significance.
In addition to its work on "Bioethics 1.0" issues, which address topics relating directly to life and death—such as assisted suicide, abortion, and reproductive technologies—the Center's focus on "Bioethics 2.0" issues—questions at the intersection of humanity, ethics, and emerging technologies—finds a natural home at LeTourneau, where faculty and students are already engaged in thoughtful Christian reflection on how technology shapes human flourishing.
"CBHD will complement and expand the important efforts already underway at LeTourneau," President Mason noted. "The Center adds a new dimension to our Faith, Science, and Technology Initiative, expanding our reach and offering additional venues for faculty and student engagement."
