LETU To Present Spring Masterworks Concert April 15 in Belcher Center

[ARCHIVED NEWS RELEASE]

03-22-2019

LeTourneau University's Spring Masterworks concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 15, in the Belcher Center, featuring a 90-voice mass choir, full orchestra and soloists. LETU President Dr. Dale A. Lunsford will give the welcome and invitation. The public concert is free of charge.

The evening will include the premiere performance of LETU Director of Fine Arts Dr. Jim Taylor's Cambridge Songs Suite No. 2, a 17-minute suite for choir, orchestra and soloists. Taylor's original composition is based on an 11th century manuscript housed at Cambridge University for two centuries and said to be the most important collection of Latin poetry between Charlemagne and Carmina Burana.

Taylor's composition is one that over 40 of our LETU choir members will present as part of a 125-voice choir and orchestra on June 10 at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

LETU's 2019 Spring Masterworks concert will also include Beethoven's Symphony No. 2, Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin, and Pergolesi's Magnificat.

At 6:45 p.m., Taylor will give a pre-concert lecture on the significance of Beethoven's work, as well as Pergolesi's importance in moving music from the Baroque period to the Classical and on the relation of the Ravel piece to World War 1.

The event is sponsored by LeTourneau University and Friends of the Arts at LETU, including Texas Bank and Trust, Suzanne Cook Realty, Jim Bartlett Fine Jewelry, and other supporters of the arts in Longview.  To become a Friend of the Arts or to help sponsor this concert, contact Dr. Taylor at (903) 233-3379.
